Definitions & Vehicle Types: DGT theory test questions in English

Chapter 1 of 17 · 29 questions

The test opens with vocabulary: what counts as a moped, a quadricycle, a personal mobility vehicle (VMP) or a light truck, and terms like MAM. These questions are easy points once the definitions are clear, and they come back inside harder questions later.

1.A motorcycle has just passed its first vehicle inspection (ITV). When is the next one due?

  1. Within 4 years.
  2. Within 6 months.
  3. Within 2 years.
Show answer
Answer: C. Within 2 years.

Motorcycles, three-wheelers, quadricycles, quads, three-wheeled mopeds and light quadricycles have their first inspection (ITV) 4 years after registration. After that, they need one every 2 years for the rest of the vehicle's life. So 4 years and 6 months are both wrong.

2.A cycle is a vehicle with...

  1. two or more wheels, powered by either a motor or pedals.
  2. two wheels, powered by a motor.
  3. at least two wheels, powered by its riders through pedals or cranks.
Show answer
Answer: C. at least two wheels, powered by its riders through pedals or cranks.

A cycle has at least two wheels and moves by the muscle power of the people riding it, mainly through pedals or cranks. It has no motor doing the work, so the options that mention a motor are wrong.

3.When does a car need its first vehicle inspection (ITV)?

  1. 3 years after it was first registered.
  2. 4 years after it was first registered.
  3. 4 years after it was built or imported.
Show answer
Answer: B. 4 years after it was first registered.

Cars are exempt from the inspection (ITV) for their first 4 years, counted from first registration, not from the date they were built or imported. From 4 to 10 years old, they need one every 2 years. After 10 years, they need one every year.

4.A vehicle is any machine...

  1. that is on a public road.
  2. that has an engine.
  3. that is fit to travel on public roads.
Show answer
Answer: C. that is fit to travel on public roads.

Under Spanish traffic rules, a vehicle is any device able to travel on the roads covered by the Traffic Law, meaning it is fit to travel on public roads. Simply being on a road doesn't make something a vehicle, and many vehicles, such as bicycles, have no engine.

5.On a motorcycle with a separate control for each brake, how do you usually work the front brake?

  1. With your right hand, using a lever on the handlebar.
  2. With your left hand, using a lever on the handlebar.
  3. With your left foot, using a pedal.
Show answer
Answer: A. With your right hand, using a lever on the handlebar.

On most motorcycles, the front brake is the right handlebar lever and the throttle is also on the right. The left lever is the clutch and the left pedal is the gear shift. The rear brake is worked with your right foot.

6.An automobile is a motor vehicle normally used...

  1. to do work or provide certain services.
  2. to do farm work.
  3. to transport people, goods, or both at once, or to tow other vehicles for that purpose.
Show answer
Answer: C. to transport people, goods, or both at once, or to tow other vehicles for that purpose.

An automobile is a motor vehicle meant to transport people, goods, or both at the same time. To count as one, it must have at least four wheels and no more than 9 seats, including the driver's seat. The other options describe work, services, or farm tasks rather than this transport purpose.

7.Can you ride a Personal Mobility Vehicle (VMP) that has a saddle?

  1. No, a VMP with a saddle is always banned.
  2. Only if the VMP has a self-balancing system.
  3. Only in pedestrian zones.
Show answer
Answer: B. Only if the VMP has a self-balancing system.

A VMP may have a seat or saddle only if it has a self-balancing system, which keeps it stable. So saddles are not banned outright, but not every VMP with a saddle is allowed. Pedestrian zones have nothing to do with this rule.

8.Do vehicles for people with disabilities have to travel on the shoulder?

  1. Yes, when there is no lane or part of the road set aside for them.
  2. No, they may use the shoulder whenever they think it's necessary.
  3. No, it depends on what officers say and on the type of road.
Show answer
Answer: A. Yes, when there is no lane or part of the road set aside for them.

If there is no road or part of the road set aside for them, vehicles for people with disabilities must use the right shoulder, as long as it is usable and wide enough. If it isn't, they use only as much of the roadway as they need. It is a set rule, not a matter of choice or of officers' instructions.

9.What is a Personal Mobility Vehicle (VMP)?

  1. A vehicle that can also run on a combustion engine.
  2. A vehicle designed for up to 2 seats.
  3. A vehicle with one or more wheels.
Show answer
Answer: C. A vehicle with one or more wheels.

A VMP has one or more wheels and a single seat. It runs only on electric motors, with a maximum design speed of 6 to 25 km/h. So combustion engines and two-seat designs don't fit the definition.

10.Can six people ride in a car that seats five, including the driver?

  1. Yes, in towns and cities.
  2. Yes, as long as the car's maximum authorized mass (MMA) isn't exceeded.
  3. No, you can't carry more people than the authorized number of seats.
Show answer
Answer: C. No, you can't carry more people than the authorized number of seats.

You may never carry more people than the car's authorized number of seats, whatever the reason. A five-seat car can't take six people, even in town or if the maximum authorized mass (MMA) is not exceeded.

11.Can motorcycles, mopeds or three-wheeled vehicles tow a trailer or semitrailer?

  1. No.
  2. Yes, and they can carry people in the trailer.
  3. Yes, if it's daytime and visibility isn't reduced, among other conditions.
Show answer
Answer: C. Yes, if it's daytime and visibility isn't reduced, among other conditions.

Motorcycles, three-wheelers, mopeds, cycles and bicycles may tow a trailer or semitrailer weighing no more than 50% of the towing vehicle's unladen mass. They may do so only in daylight and when visibility is not reduced. Carrying people in the trailer is not allowed.

12.Under traffic rules, is a motorcycle an automobile?

  1. No, because only passenger cars are automobiles.
  2. Yes, because it is a vehicle that moves on its own.
  3. Yes.
Show answer
Answer: C. Yes.

Yes. The Traffic Regulations define motorcycles as two- or three-wheeled automobiles with an engine over 50 cc if it's internal combustion, and/or a top speed over 45 km/h. Some may also have a sidecar. Automobiles aren't limited to passenger cars, and simply moving on its own is not what the definition is based on.

13.Under Spanish traffic law, a driver is the person who...

  1. operates the steering wheel or drives a vehicle.
  2. operates the steering wheel of a vehicle only during practice runs.
  3. walks alongside a bicycle or two-wheeled moped while pushing it.
Show answer
Answer: A. operates the steering wheel or drives a vehicle.

Spanish traffic law defines a driver as the person who operates the steering or controls of a vehicle, or who leads one or more animals. Limiting it to practice runs is too narrow. Someone walking and pushing a bicycle or moped counts as a pedestrian, not a driver.

14.A vehicle is any device...

  1. that is on a public road.
  2. that is fit for traveling on public roads.
  3. that has an engine.
Show answer
Answer: B. that is fit for traveling on public roads.

Traffic rules define a vehicle as any device fit for traveling on public roads. This covers non-motorized vehicles like bicycles as well as motor vehicles like motorcycles and cars. Being on the road or having an engine is not what makes something a vehicle.

15.What is a convertible passenger-cargo vehicle (vehículo mixto adaptable) used for?

  1. Carrying people and goods, at the same time or separately.
  2. Carrying people only.
  3. Carrying goods only.
Show answer
Answer: A. Carrying people and goods, at the same time or separately.

A vehículo mixto adaptable can carry people, goods, or both at once, since you can add or remove seats. It has a maximum of 9 seats, including the driver's seat. It is not limited to only people or only goods.

16.Does a moped have to be registered?

  1. Yes, but only to ride on roads outside towns.
  2. No, it's optional.
  3. Yes, it's required to ride on any public road.
Show answer
Answer: C. Yes, it's required to ride on any public road.

To ride a moped legally on any public road, it must first be registered with the provincial traffic office of the traffic department (DGT). Registration is not optional, and it is not limited to roads outside towns.

17.If you ride as a passenger on a motorcycle, how should you sit?

  1. Astride, with your feet on the side footrests, both in town and out of town.
  2. Astride, with your feet on the side footrests, but only on urban roads.
  3. Any way you like, as long as you're comfortable.
Show answer
Answer: A. Astride, with your feet on the side footrests, both in town and out of town.

As a motorcycle passenger, you must always sit astride with both feet on the side footrests for safety. This applies on every type of road, in town and out of town. It is not limited to urban roads, and comfort alone is not enough.

18.What engine size does a two-wheeled moped have?

  1. No more than 50 cc, with a top speed of no more than 45 km/h.
  2. Less than 50 cc.
  3. More than 50 cc, if it has an internal combustion engine.
Show answer
Answer: A. No more than 50 cc, with a top speed of no more than 45 km/h.

A moped has an engine of up to 50 cc and a top speed of no more than 45 km/h. Spanish traffic law does not count mopeds as motor vehicles (vehículos de motor), unlike motorcycles. "Less than 50 cc" leaves out the 50 cc limit itself and the speed cap, and more than 50 cc describes a motorcycle.

19.On a two-way road, a tram runs in the center of the road on tracks used by trams in both directions. On which side do you pass it?

  1. On the right.
  2. On the left.
  3. On either the right or the left.
Show answer
Answer: A. On the right.

You normally pass on the left, but a tram running in the center of the road with tracks in both directions must be passed on the right. Passing on the left would put you in the path of trams coming the other way, risking a head-on collision. So the left, or either side, is wrong here.

20.Light trailers are those with a maximum authorized mass (MMA, masa máxima autorizada) of...

  1. 750 kilograms.
  2. less than 750 kilograms, except for agricultural trailers.
  3. more than 750 kilograms.
Show answer
Answer: B. less than 750 kilograms, except for agricultural trailers.

Light trailers have an MMA of 750 kg or less. They don't need their own vehicle license (circulation permit), their own registration number, or separate insurance, but they must display the towing vehicle's registration number. Option A gives only a single figure instead of the range, and trailers over 750 kg are not light trailers.

21.Is it important for motorcycle riders and passengers to wear proper clothing?

  1. Yes, it's essential because your body is directly exposed to the weather.
  2. No, it doesn't matter as long as you wear a helmet.
  3. No, because it does nothing for your safety.
Show answer
Answer: A. Yes, it's essential because your body is directly exposed to the weather.

On a motorcycle, proper clothing and gear protect your body in a crash and shield you from bad weather. A helmet alone is not enough protection. Saying clothing does nothing for safety is simply wrong.

22.On which types of roads are mopeds not allowed?

  1. On freeways (autopistas) and divided highways (autovías).
  2. On freeways (autopistas) only.
  3. On roads without a shoulder.
Show answer
Answer: A. On freeways (autopistas) and divided highways (autovías).

Mopeds are banned from freeways (autopistas) and divided highways (autovías), as well as any road with signs prohibiting them. They can't reach the minimum speed required on these roads. The ban is not limited to freeways, and roads without a shoulder are not banned for that reason alone.

23.A two-wheeled motor vehicle that, by design, can go faster than 45 km/h is...

  1. a bicycle.
  2. a motorcycle.
  3. a moped.
Show answer
Answer: B. a motorcycle.

A motorcycle is a two-wheeled motor vehicle, with an engine over 50 cc if it is combustion-powered, whose design allows speeds above 45 km/h. A moped is capped at 45 km/h. A bicycle has no engine at all.

24.Can a person in a wheelchair travel on a road outside the sidewalk?

  1. Yes, on the shoulder if it's usable, or otherwise on the roadway.
  2. No, never.
Show answer
Answer: A. Yes, on the shoulder if it's usable, or otherwise on the roadway.

Under Article 121 of the traffic regulations, a person in a wheelchair, motorized or not, moving at walking speed may use the shoulder. If there is no shoulder or it isn't usable, they may use the roadway, with caution and following the safety rules. So a flat "no" is wrong.

25.Can vehicles for people with reduced mobility count as Personal Mobility Vehicles (vehículos de movilidad personal, VMP)?

  1. Yes, but only in urban areas.
  2. No, they are expressly excluded from the VMP definition.
  3. Yes, they count as VMPs.
Show answer
Answer: B. No, they are expressly excluded from the VMP definition.

Royal Decree 970/2020 expressly excludes vehicles for people with reduced mobility from the VMP category. They follow their own rules, not VMP rules. So they are not VMPs anywhere, not even just in urban areas.

26.If your vehicle gets a major technical repair or modification, do you need to have it inspected?

  1. Yes, at a vehicle inspection (ITV) station.
  2. No, it isn't necessary.
  3. Yes, at an authorized repair shop.
Show answer
Answer: A. Yes, at a vehicle inspection (ITV) station.

A major repair or modification that changes the vehicle's characteristics must pass an inspection before you drive on public roads. This inspection makes the change legal. Only an official ITV station can do it, never a repair shop, and skipping it is not allowed.

27.Can a person in a wheelchair travel on the right shoulder of a road?

  1. No.
  2. Only on roads in town.
  3. Yes, as long as they are careful and take the necessary precautions.
Show answer
Answer: C. Yes, as long as they are careful and take the necessary precautions.

Under Article 121 of the General Traffic Regulations, a person in a wheelchair, motorized or not, moving at walking speed may use the shoulder. If there is no usable shoulder, they may use the roadway. This applies both in town and outside town, as long as they travel carefully and follow the road safety rules.

28.An automobile is a motor vehicle normally used...

  1. for construction or certain services.
  2. to carry people, goods, or both at once, or to tow other vehicles for that purpose.
  3. for farm work.
Show answer
Answer: B. to carry people, goods, or both at once, or to tow other vehicles for that purpose.

Spanish traffic rules define an automobile as a motor vehicle normally used to carry people, goods, or both, or to tow other vehicles for that purpose. Construction, service, and farm vehicles are special vehicles (vehículos especiales), which are excluded from this definition.

29.In an accident, which injuries are not covered by compulsory insurance (seguro obligatorio)?

  1. Injuries to the passengers of the vehicle that caused the accident.
  2. Damage to the other vehicle.
  3. Injuries to the at-fault driver.
Show answer
Answer: C. Injuries to the at-fault driver.

Compulsory insurance does not cover the at-fault driver's own injuries. It also does not cover damage to that driver's vehicle or the items carried in it. Injuries to that vehicle's passengers and damage to the other vehicle are covered.
